Workers at two natural-gas facilities operated by Chevron in
Australia have called off plans to restart industrial action after
endorsing draft deals on pay and conditions.
The labor dispute between Chevron and workers at its Gorgon and
Wheatstone liquefied-natural-gas facilities in Australia has
rattled global energy markets. The operations account for roughly
7% of global supply.
The Offshore Alliance, a partnership between two local unions,
said members at a mass meeting Tuesday endorsed three draft
enterprise agreements and agreed to suspend industrial action.
Workers recently voted to restart action beginning Oct. 19,
alleging Chevron had attempted to walk back on an agreement
recommended by Australia's workplace arbiter last month.
"We hope this can now be put to rest," Offshore Alliance
spokesperson Brad Gandy said Wednesday.
A Chevron spokesperson said the company welcomes the endorsement
of the agreements and will prepare for an employee ballot to be
held next week. "If voted up, the agreements will then be submitted
to the Fair Work Commission for approval," the spokesperson said in
an emailed statement.
