American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), the largest
publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company,
announced today it has been named to the newly-launched NAACP
Equity, Inclusion and Empowerment Index.
“We are extremely honored to be included in the inaugural NAACP
Equity, Inclusion and Empowerment Index,” said Susan Story,
president and CEO of American Water. “American Water is a
values-driven company, and our employees represent the communities
we are privileged to serve. Every day our people take pride in
delivering the critical services of water, sanitation, and fire
protection to about 15 million Americans. Our 7,200 employees serve
over 1,600 communities across the country, and we aspire to make
every community better because we are there.”
The NAACP Equity, Inclusion and Empowerment Index is a new tool
created in partnership with Impact Shares and Morningstar to track
and monitor indicators that assess racial equity and inclusion
policies among U.S. corporations with a capitalization of $2
billion or more.
The index is designed to help guide and inform companies in
assessing and actively promoting racial and ethnic equity in every
aspect of their business, operations and strategy; and to promote
socially responsible investing in companies with a strong
commitment to equity and diversity. Commitment is measured through
policies, programs, performance, as well as social impact.
Companies are judged not only based on their own workforces and
boards of directors, but also on their supply chains and community
interactions.
Earlier this year, American Water was named as one of the 100
Most Sustainable Companies by Barron’s Magazine. The company was
recently recognized by The Philadelphia Inquirer as one of the
top-ranked companies in the Philadelphia region on diversity,
governance, & transparency.
In 2017, American Water published its biennial corporate
responsibility report that highlighted the value the company places
on being a good corporate citizen.
