Amazon.com Inc. said Tuesday that its subsidiary Amazon Web Services Inc. and BMW AG are pushing through a data-led partnership as the German luxury-car maker seeks to bolster digitalization and innovation in the auto industry.

The e-retail giant said AWS and BMW will develop cloud-based solutions, with BMW migrating data from business units and operations to AWS, including some core IT systems and databases for functions such as sales, manufacturing and maintenance.

"By combining the domain expertise of the BMW Group with AWS's demonstrated leadership in the cloud, we are expanding our impact across the automotive industry so that stakeholders, from parts manufacturers to mechanics, can benefit from greater visibility and insights," Matt Garman, vice president of sales and marketing at AWS, said.

Amazon said BMW is also expanding a cloud data hub for its employees to access AWS's services, while third parties, such as car dealerships, suppliers and technology companies, will be able to contribute vehicle operating and maintenance data.

BMW will also train up to 5,000 software engineers.
