Equinor ASA said Thursday that it has made an oil and gas discovery close to the Troll field in the North Sea, with preliminary estimates putting the size of the find between 17 million and 47 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent, the majority of which is oil.

The Norwegian energy major said the new discovery, called Rover Sor, is the seventh discovery in the area since 2019, with work underway to coordinate the development of them by utilizing existing infrastructure.

"Discoveries close to existing infrastructure are important to maintain oil and gas production from the Norwegian continental shelf," Geir Sortveit, Equinor's senior vice president for exploration and production west operations, said.

"They need smaller volumes to be profitable and can be put on stream quickly with low carbon emissions. As this discovery is close to the Troll field and other discoveries we have made in the area, we can already now state that it will be commercial."

Equinor is operator of the production license and partners are DNO ASA, Wellesley Petroleum and Petoro.
