    INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2002--Eli Lilly and Company
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Sidney Taurel
announced today that Robert A. Armitage has been promoted to senior
vice president and general counsel of Lilly effective January 1, 2003.
Armitage will become a member of the company's policy committee and
report to Taurel. Armitage has previously served as vice president and
general patent counsel for Lilly Research Laboratories. In his new
role, he will succeed Rebecca O. Kendall, who has announced her
decision to retire at the end of 2002.

"Bob Armitage is not only one of our country's most recognized and
respected patent law experts, he is also strongly experienced in the
pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. His broad background,
deep expertise and sound judgment will enable him to make significant
contributions to our company as a member of its senior management
team," said Taurel.

Prior to joining Lilly in 1999, Armitage was a partner in the law firm
of Vinson & Elkins LLP and headed the firm's intellectual law practice
in Washington, D.C. Previously, he held various positions at The
Upjohn Company, where he was vice president, corporate intellectual
property law, from 1987 to 1993. Armitage has served as an adjunct
professor of law at George Washington University Law School and as
former president of both the American Intellectual Property Law
Association and the Association of Corporate Patent Counsel. He also
served as a member of the board of directors of Human Genome Sciences
for several years prior to joining Lilly. He received a bachelor of
arts degree from Albion College in 1970, a master of science degree
from the University of Michigan in 1971 and a juris doctor from the
University of Michigan Law School in 1973.

Kendall joined Lilly as an attorney in 1975 and was promoted to
general counsel effective February 1995. She was named senior vice
president and general counsel in May 1998. She is a member of the
Indianapolis, Indiana, and American Bar associations and the
Association of General Counsel where she serves on its executive
committee; a trustee of the Christian Theological Seminary; and a
director of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, Union Planters
Bank and Play Ball Indiana.

Douglas Norman, currently deputy general patent counsel at Lilly, will
become deputy general counsel and general patent counsel. Norman
joined Lilly in 1981 and has had a variety of assignments in Lilly
Research Laboratories and the law division. He holds both a bachelor
degree in microbiology and a juris doctor from Indiana University.
