Macy's Inc. (M) on Thursday said it plans to hire about 80,000
extra workers for the holiday season, in line with last year, but
it said fewer of those seasonal positions will be in its
stores.
The Cincinnati department-store chain said roughly 30,000 of the
seasonal positions will be based in its fulfillment facilities, up
from 23,500 last year, as online shopping continues to eat into
brick-and-mortar sales.
Macy's said it will conduct a national hiring event on Oct. 24,
adding that it is offering full-time, part-time and flexible
seasonal positions.
The retailer said more than 8,000 seasonal employees found
permanent work with the company after last year's holiday
season.
Outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas last month
said U.S. seasonal hiring is expected to stagnate or fall slightly
this year after declining last year.
Gap Inc. (GPS) last week said it planned to hire less than half
the number of seasonal employees this year than it did last year,
instead offering extra hours to its current staff.
Target Corp. (TGT) has announced plans to hire about 133,000
seasonal workers, an increase of more than 5,000 over last year's
level.
