Gateway Goes Gigabit, Launching Line of Network Switches New
Products Mark Gateway's Entry into Networking Market POWAY, Calif.,
April 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gateway, Inc. customers don't
have to switch vendors to buy switches anymore. (Logo:

today launches a new line of managed and unmanaged Layer 2 network
switches targeted at small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs),
educational institutions and government agencies. The Gateway 7200,
7400 and 7600 Series products not only offer Gateway customers
enterprise functionality at value-based prices, but also now give
them a single point of accountability for their total network needs
-- from servers to storage to switches to clients. Based on
Broadcom's switch and PHY chip technology, the new switches
officially mark Gateway's entry into the networking market,
building out an enterprise systems portfolio that includes
Gateway-branded servers, storage and management software. In a
separate announcement, the company today also announces the launch
of Gateway wireless access points (see press release for more
information). "Larger file sizes, voice-over-IP and gigabit NICs in
desktops and notebooks are all driving a fundamental change in
organizations from 10/100 to gigabit speeds. And it's critical that
their network switches don't become bottlenecks," said Scott
Weinbrandt, senior vice president of Gateway's Enterprise Systems
Division. "Gateway's new lines of managed and unmanaged switches
offer enterprise feature sets at disruptive prices, and allow
customers to purchase a complete solution from a single vendor."
The Gateway 7200 and 7400 Series unmanaged switches provide
non-blocking, wire-speed switching for 10, 100 and 1,000 megabit
network clients. The switches are targeted for small businesses and
branch offices due to their ease of deployment (auto cable
detection, plug-and-play installation), flexibility (desktop or 1U
rackmount) and manageability (LED health indicators, support for up
to 8,000 MAC addresses). The 7200 Series family ranges from the
entry-level 7201-16, a 16-port 10/100 switch priced at $79, to the
higher-end 7201-24.2, a 24-port 10/100 switch with two gigabit
ports priced at $199. The 7400 Series family ranges from the
7401-05, a 5-port 10/10/1000 switch priced at $99 up to the
7401-24, a 24-port 10/10/1000 switch priced at $399 -- less than
half the price of similar competitive products. Gateway's 7600
Series family of managed switches are built for demanding
enterprise environments, with built-in SNMP to provide maximum
network control, regulate traffic and eliminate server bottlenecks.
The products offer true enterprise-class management features such
as console, telnet, web browser and SMNP/RMON interfaces, VLAN
support and traffic prioritization. Packed in a 1U form factor, the
7600 Series offers both the 24-port 7601-24.2, a 10/100 switch with
combo 2 10/100/1000 SFP priced at $399, and the 48-port 7601-48.2,
a 10/10/1000 switch priced at $799. Both products support 8,000 MAC
address table entries, QoS/CoS, IGMP snooping, port trunking, port
mirroring and other bandwidth control features. Gateway will launch
an additional line of managed switches in Q3 for larger-scale
networks. "Gateway is building out its comprehensive line of
systems and networking products to provide a complete solution to
customers," said Maximilian Flisi, Research Analyst, Enterprise
Networks, IDC. "These new switches will serve as an effective
add-on sale, although Gateway's managed line is priced
competitively and may be a lead purchase driver for many
customers." The Gateway 7200, 7400 and 7600 Series switches include
Gateway's standard one-year, on-site, next-business day,
parts-and-labor limited warranty(1), upgradeable to three years
upon request(1). In addition, Gateway's optional four-hour, on-site
response service is also available for customers wanting a
heightened level of support(1). Finally, the company offers 24x7
phone support through a dedicated team of wireless certified
technicians.(1) Gateway is a leading branded integrator of
