Back-Office To Front-Office: Next Generation of Gateway Systems
Management Software Has Customers Covered Gateway System Manager
3.0 Monitors Servers to Desktops - in Real Time LAS VEGAS, COMDEX,
Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Helping customers manage their
servers, desktops and notebooks in real-time from a single, easy-
to-use console, Gateway today launches its next-generation systems
management software, Gateway(R) System Manager (GSM) 3.0. (Logo:

provides IT administrators with a browser-based tool to manage
systems remotely via the Web, day or night, from any location.
Based on industry standards, GSM provides information on predictive
failures of hardware, system events, hardware and software change
configurations, internal temperatures, fan speeds, power supply
status and other components. By reporting critical system
information, GSM ensures the highest level of system availability
to help reduce total cost of ownership. Included as a standard
offering free of charge with every Gateway server, GSM features
both in-band and out-of-band management for Gateway rackmount
servers (Gateway 955, 975, and 995), as well as in-band management
with the company's complete tower line (Gateway 920, 960, and 980).
In addition, GSM also provides some management capabilities for
Gateway's growing storage product line, including the Gateway 820
LTO Autoloader and Gateway 850 SCSI JBOD. Perhaps most importantly
for businesses needing flexibility with their systems management
software, GSM is standards-based and compatible with all major
enterprise consoles, including IBM Tivoli, CA Unicenter, BMC Patrol
and HP OpenView. This allows the product to operate flawlessly in a
multi-vendor environment found in many customer networks. "We
recognize that enterprise customers seek a complete systems
management solution from their enterprise systems partner," said
Scott Weinbrandt, senior vice president and general manager of
Gateway's Enterprise Systems Division. "Gateway continues to invest
in this area, working with strong software partners such as LANDesk
Software to give our customers a simple and flexible solution that
integrates into multi-vendor environments." To maintain performance
levels and gain immediate feedback, GSM 3.0 enables Gateway
administrators to predefine acceptable thresholds for client or
server health status and receive automatic alerts. Additionally,
GSM provides detailed logs and reports of system changes and
problems, which, when combined with hardware and software inventory
data, can be easily gathered and exported into other applications.
GSM leverages core technology of LANDesk Software, enabling
standards-based management of multi-vendor environments. "LANDesk
Software and Gateway have worked together for years to bundle
LANDesk client management software on every Gateway business PC,"
said Dave Taylor, vice president of worldwide strategic alliances
at LANDesk Software. "Today, we're pleased to extend our
relationship by providing key technology that will enable Gateway
customers to manage all of their Gateway systems in a single
interface." Availability Gateway Systems Manager 3.0 will
officially ship in mid-December and will be provided free of charge
with every Gateway server and managed storage product. Gateway
today also launches the Gateway 840 SATA JBOD, Gateway 860 NAS
appliance and a SAN alliance with Hitachi -- all part of a major
new push by the company into the rapidly growing storage market.
