Amazon.com Inc. will invest in natural carbon-removal projects
in Brazil in a partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the online
retail giant said Thursday.
The company's initial investment will support the restoration of
small farms' degraded cattle pastures to native forest and
agroforestry, Amazon said. That project would restore about 20,000
hectares of land within three years and remove up to 10 million
metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through 2050,
according to Amazon.
The agroforestry systems in the project also would help support
farmers through the sale of cocoa and other crops, Amazon said.
The initial project will take place in the Brazilian state of
Para, which is crossed by the Amazon River.
