Bayer AG said Thursday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its Mirena device for extended use as a contraceptive.

The German pharmaceutical and chemicals company said its supplemental new drug application for use of up to eight years in the contraception indication was approved by the regulator.

Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine system.

Its duration of use remains unchanged at up to five years for its second approved indication in the U.S.
