Horticulture specialist William Sinclair Holdings PLC (SNCL.LN) said Tuesday first-half trading has been in line with its expectations on strong sales in March.

The company didn't say what its first-half expectations were. House broker Arbuthnot Securities expects the company to post fiscal 2009 sales of GBP55 million.

Chief Executive Bernard Burns said the strong sales performance in the six months to March 31 "provides evidence that people are spending more time in their gardens during the current difficult economic situation."

William Sinclair said the Easter selling period continued the trend of strong sales, with favorable weather in March and April facilitating an early start to this year's peat harvest.

William Sinclair's customers include U.K. supermarket Tesco (TSCO.LN).
