Clipper Ventures, organisers of the Round-the-World yacht
races, announced today that Portsmouth is to sign up for a
yacht in the prestigious Times Clipper 2000 race. To
celebrate the Millennium, the race organisers invited
individual towns and cities to represent a yacht in the eleven-
month circumnavigation which will test boats and crews to the
limit.
The signing ceremony is being held today at a 10.00 am
reception at the #150 million Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth
development. It was announced in January at the London
International Boat Show that Gunwharf Quays would host the
start and finish of the prestigious Race.
Discussions are also well underway between Clipper Ventures
and other major towns and cities across the UK, such as
Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and Plymouth, which
have shown a keen interest in the opportunities provided by
the race. Jersey Clipper was the first 'named yacht' to be
signed up. One of the most exciting aspects is that this race
is going to give people the chance to get behind their team
and their city as they compete against their rivals.
Commenting on todays announcement, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston,
Chairman of Clipper Ventures, said: "We are most pleased with
todays announcement which has followed several months of
negotiation and are delighted that Portsmouth Clipper will be
on the start line. Portsmouth is very much the traditional
home of the Royal Navy and its close involvement with this
high-profile event is in-keeping with its maritime history.
The Times Clipper 2000 will combine personal endeavour with
true sporting competitiveness and with over 50% of crew places
already filled, we welcome Portsmouth entrants to race on
Portsmouth Clipper."
The Times Clipper 2000 will begin at Gunwharf Quays,
Portsmouth Harbour on 14 October 2000 and the route will
follow the proven successful format of the current and earlier
Clipper round-the-world races. Comprising six legs, the fleet
will visit over 14 ports stopping in some of the most exotic
locations in the world including Hawaii, Japan, China,
Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brazil and the USA. In
addition to being the only race to travel up the Yangtze river
to Shanghai, the race is the longest of all the Round-the-
World events covering a distance of over 35,000 miles from
start to finish and is highly demanding for skippers and crews
alike.
