Birse Group plc ("Birse") notes the announcement made today by Leicester City
Plc that it is petitioning the High Court to be placed into administration.
Birse has recently finalised the construction of a new stadium for Leicester
City Plc and as a result of Leicester City Plc's announcement, Birse expects to
incur a bad debt in the region of #5.5 million which will be reported as an
exceptional operating charge in its interim results to 31 October 2002.
In July 2002, Birse reported a strong turnaround in profitability and cash
resources as against the previous year. Despite today's announcement, Birse's
main markets are expected to remain steady and the group, therefore, expects to
continue to make progress in its underlying performance.
Martin Budden, Birse Group plc's Group Managing Director, commented,
"This decision by Leicester City plc is regrettable, however, Birse is in a
stronger position than in previous years, due to the actions undertaken by
management and we continue to make progress with our underlying businesses."
