Birse, the construction, plant hire and property group, announces the
appointment of David Cotterill as a non-executive director with effect from 23
April 2002.

David Cotterill, aged 59, brings extensive experience having operated at senior
levels in various engineering companies.  He is currently a non-executive
director at British Vita plc and was formerly chief executive of Renold plc and
a director of Senior Engineering Group plc.

Commenting on this appointment, Peter Watson, Chairman of Birse, said:

"I am delighted that we have been able to attract a director of David's calibre.
I am sure that his business experience, energy and other personal qualities
will be of great benefit to the group for many years to come."
