                               Birse Group plc

 Birse Group plc ("Birse") announced on 27 October 2000 that it was aware of
    the likelihood of a material write off from an old contract subject to
                                 litigation.

That litigation has today been settled. Under the terms of the settlement
Birse will receive in total #3 million of which #2.5 million is to be paid
within seven days with the balance payable upon completion of certain
modification works to be undertaken by Birse. When Birse's legal and related
costs are taken into account the effect of this settlement will be a write off
of approximately #16 million. As previously announced this will be charged as
an exceptional item in Birse's results for the year ending 30 April 2001.
