Absa Group Ltd. (ASA.JO) Monday said its deputy chairman will temporarily assume the position of chairman until a successor is appointed for Gill Marcus, who has been named governor of the country's central bank.

President Jacob Zuma Sunday said Marcus would replace Tito Mboweni as governor of the South African Reserve Bank, effective Nov. 9.

Marcus will step down as chairwoman of Absa and Absa Bank Ltd. (ABSP.JO) with immediate effect, and Deputy Chairman Dave Brink will assume the post on an interim basis, the financial services company said.

Absa, which is majority owned by U.K. lender Barclays PLC (BCS), said its board will follow the necessary governance process to appoint a chairperson.
