ATLANTIC TELECOM SHARES TO MOVE TO TELECOMMUNICATIONS SECTOR

Shares in Atlantic Telecom Group PLC ("Atlantic Telecom") will be quoted under
the Telecommunications subsector of the FTSE International UK listed companies
indices from Monday 22 March 1999.

The reclassification was made and announced by the FTSE actuaries industry
classification committee in its quarterly review. Atlantic Telecom is currently
quoted under the media sector.

Atlantic Telecom, which has been operating a successful telecoms service in
Scotland since October 1996, was last week awarded five new licences in
principle, for major regions in England.

Atlantic Telecom currently provides directly connected innovative services,
using FRA technology, in three major Scottish cities, Glasgow, Aberdeen and
Dundee, with services in Edinburgh due to launch shortly. The build out of
these networks is progressing well and the company is on track to complete the
Scottish builds later this year. Atlantic remains focused on building its
customer base in Scotland, but also looks forward to developing services in
England, following the DTI's announcement of its new regional licences in
England.

Commenting, Graham J Duncan, Executive Chairman of Atlantic Telecom Group PLC
stated: "We are very pleased to be re-classified in a sector which more readily
reflects our core business. The majority of our turnover now comes from the
provision of telecom services, and with the potential for growth provided by the
new licences we were awarded last week, telecoms will remain the main driver of
our growth in the future".
