ATLANTIC TELECOM GROUP PLC
20th January 1998
ATLANTIC TELECOM RECEIVES
NATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS LICENCE
On 26 November 1997, Atlantic Telecom Group PLC
announced that, subject to statutory consultation
procedures, it had been awarded a licence to provide
telecommunications services throughout the United
Kingdom (a PTO licence) under Section 7 of the
Telecommunication Act 1984. Atlantic is now pleased to
announce that the statutory consultation procedures
have been completed and a licence has been issued to
Atlantic.
This licence permits the Company to provide facilities,
including switch facilities, anywhere within the UK
allowing it to expand certain of its operations,
particularly its Crest indirect service, outside its
current operating areas.
Alone, the licence does not allow the Company to extend
its fixed radio access ("FRA") services outside of
Scotland which are enabled only through the issue of
further licences under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949
("WTA"). The Company awaits details of the procedures
that it will need to follow to apply for and gain
licences under the WTA which it expects will be
clarified shortly by the Radiocommunications Agency (an
executive agency of the DTI). Licences permitting, the
Company fully intends to expand its FRA operations into
certain key regions of England and Wales.
Commenting today, Graham J Duncan, Executive Chairman
of Atlantic Telecom Group PLC, said:
"We are delighted that we have received a national PTO
licence and will now be formulating our plans to extend
certain of our services beyond Scotland."
