alpha-En Corporation (ALPE.PK) (alpha-En) today announced the filing of a US patent application and a PCT international patent application with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for the “Electrolytic Production of Lithium Metal.” A provisional application was filed for this technology with the USPTO in June 2010. alpha-En holds the exclusive rights to these applications.

Jerome I. Feldman, Chairman of alpha-En, stated, “We believe that global demand for lithium will rise in coming years, driven by its use in industrial applications, such as consumer electronics, chemical, pharmaceutical, and nuclear, a growing acceptance of battery-powered automobiles, and advancements in battery technology. Based on results to date, we believe that the licensed, proprietary lithium production technology associated with these patent applications offers a number of advantages over lithium extraction techniques currently in use, including lower production temperatures, a more favorable environmental risk profile, reduced raw material and manufacturing costs, and manufacturing flexibility. The filing of these patent applications is an important step in our ongoing efforts towards commercialization.”
