TOHO Cinemas Uses Quintum Tenor MultiPath Switches to Create a VoIP Network for 30 Theatres in Japan

EATONTOWN, NJ , announced today that TOHO Cinemas, the movie
entertainment division of Toho Co., Ltd, deployed a VoIP network
with Tenor VoIP MultiPath switches and gateways to more than 30
cinemas throughout Japan, integrating an Asterisk-based phone
system with the existing PBXs at each site.
TOHO wanted to deploy a cost-effective IP-based phone system
with new IP phone extensions to each cinema's screening room, and
they wanted to have it integrated with the existing PBX phone
system in each theater, while networking all the theaters together.
They created a VoIP network with an Asterisk IP telephone server
that connects all the theaters together and integrates the new IP
telephony network with all the existing PBXs. This enabled TOHO to
create a single network that combines voice and data, including
Internet access and mail on their VPN service.
Quintum's Tenor enabled TOHO to centralize their information
line utilizing Asterisk's interactive voice recognition (IVR)
capability to automate the routing of their incoming calls to
available information operators. TOHO plans to expand this
capability to add a synthetic speech application for providing
movie information for each branch.
TOHO worked with YCS, Quintum's reseller in Japan, to develop
the plan to integrate these new features into TOHO's
next-generation network. YCS recommended Tenor VoIP MultiPath
switches and gateways, which are known for their ability to easily
'drop in' to a telephony network with legacy PBXs and require
little to no reconfiguration or modifications to existing
communications equipment.
As a result, a Tenor VoIP gateway was installed at each of the
30 cinema locations to provide VoIP connectivity between the
theaters and to integrate the legacy PBXs with the new Asterisk IP
phone system. All the telephone calls among the branches are sent
over IP with the existing business phone system.
"We selected Quintum Tenors because they easily integrated our
IP capabilities with our legacy telephones," stated Hisashi
Kikuchi, Engineer for TOHO Cinemas General Affairs Office
information system. "Quintum's product is extremely stable, and has
the added benefit that it can easily be managed remotely. In fact,
with its rich feature set, the Quintum VoIP gateway has become core
to our network."
"TOHO Cinemas' implementation is an excellent example of how
companies are deploying VoIP in their networks to add new
capabilities while leveraging the investment in their existing
voice infrastructure," said Chuck Rutledge, Vice President of
Marketing for Quintum. "TOHO was able to gain key benefits with
added capabilities and lower costs at a fraction of the price of
'fork-lifting' out their existing PBXs for a complete IP telephony
system replacement."
