HPE and 5G Lab Germany Collaborate to Deliver Next-Generation Edge Applications
April 20 2017 - 7:45AM
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:HPE) today announced a
collaboration with the 5G Lab Germany, a consortium of researchers
focused on delivering key technologies to enable 5G wireless
networks. Through this collaboration, HPE and the 5G Lab will
research the impacts of 5G wireless networks combined with HPE
Edgeline Converged Edge Systems on the telecommunications and
mobile industries. Additionally, Edgeline systems will be deployed
at the network edge to enable the next generation of applications
to take advantage of 5G network performance.
5G wireless networks promise to adapt to consumer behavior in
real time. The bandwidth improvements from 5G are expected to
dramatically increase the amount of processing required throughout
the network to deliver existing and new applications. The latency
improvements will enable a new tier of automation and control that
are not possible with today’s 4G wireless networks. HPE and 5G Lab
will partner to build proof points in autonomous vehicle
intercommunication and deliver rich end user applications by
leveraging 5G wireless networks and with HPE Edgeline Systems.
“5G plays a critical role as an enabler of the Internet of
Things (IoT),” said Dr. Tom Bradicich, vice president and general
manager, servers, converged edge and IoT systems, Hewlett Packard
Enterprise. “We are collaborating with the 5G Lab to develop high
performance compute systems at the edge, which can consume and
analyze data instantaneously to address the needs for the next
generation of automation and mobile applications,
particularly smart city and autonomous vehicle use
cases.”
The HPE Edgeline Converged Edge Systems feature a
first-of-a-kind integration of the PXIe instrumentation standard in
partnership with National Instruments, on which the industry’s
fastest 5G network testbeds have been built. 5G capabilities,
coupled with Edgeline systems, provide the industry’s most powerful
integrated communication and compute platform to empower 5G
applications.
Datacenter-grade meets
Operations-functionality
While legacy equipment uses a hardware-centric model, HPE
Edgeline systems provide a unique convergence of datacenter and
operations technologies. HPE Edgeline integrates virtualized
network functions with National Instruments software defined radio
solutions within LabVIEW, to deliver industrial wireless data
ingest capabilities needed to create 5G networks. Edgeline delivers
modern software-defined services on industry-standard computing
equipment, enabling high-performance computing functions to be
deployed at the network’s edge as opposed to the datacenter. This
allows for high performance applications to be deployed and
re-deployed at a rapid pace as the 5G standards emerge.
“Without addressing 5G network needs, the advances in automation
for mobile applications would not be possible for the
telecommunications industry,” said Dr. Gerhardt Fettweis, Vodafone
Chair Professor, Technische Universiät of Dresden. “HPE and 5G Lab
Germany are working to deliver the necessary network upgrades for
the next-generation of mobility, enabling the pathway towards the
Tactile Internet.”
Secure and innovative
The HPE Edgeline Converged Edge Systems uniquely combine high
performance computing, virtualization, manageability and security
with operational technology specific to industry via the PXIe
industry standard – the first in the industry to incorporate PXIe
technology with high performance compute.
National Instruments PXIe-based wireless modules and LabVIEW
system design software provide flexibility for network operators
looking to easily manage and modify their networks as standards
emerge to drive rapid 5G network innovation.
“HPE and National Instruments have compatible solutions for
addressing 5G prototyping scaling beyond the physical layer into
the network and even edge computing,” said James Kimery, director
of RF research and SDR marketing at National Instruments. “We are
excited to work with HPE to move 5G to the next level.”
