Medtronic PLC has been given de novo clearance from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its artificial-intelligence tool
to detect colorectal polyps, the company said Monday.
The tool, called GI Genius, applies computer-aided detection to
colonoscope videos to identify polyps that may develop into
cancer.
In studies, the tool has increased the number of polyps that are
detected compared with scanning by the human eye alone. Increasing
polyp detection has been shown to decrease the risk of colorectal
cancer, Medtronic said.
