BP PLC said late Thursday that it has agreed with Sempra LNG LLC and Mexico's Infraestructura Energetica Nova SAB de CV to enter into a contract for the delivery and receipt of the companies' first carbon-offset liquefied-natural-gas cargo.

The London-listed oil giant said the cargo is expected to be delivered to the Energia Costa Azul terminal in Mexico on Friday, and will be sourced from BP's global LNG portfolio. The estimated emissions of the LNG cargo will be offset using carbon credits sourced from a forest-creation project in Mexico.

The Energia Costa Azul Liquefaction project is a joint venture between Sempra and IEnova, and is located in the state of Baja California.

The energy company said that this was the first delivery under its new offer and Sempra LNG's first carbon-offset LNG cargo import to Mexico.

"This new offer further demonstrates our determination to remain one of the world's leading and most innovative LNG suppliers. The development and continuous improvement of a clear and reliable methodology for quantifying the carbon intensity of our LNG supply chain is an important step in helping our customers deliver their sustainability goals and supports our ambition to help the world get to net zero," the company said.
