BMW AG said Thursday that it is adjusting production at plants in the U.K. and Germany due to the world-wide chip shortage that continues to hamper the auto industry.

The German luxury-car maker is reducing some shifts at a plant in Oxford, U.K. from Friday until Wednesday and in Regensburg, Germany, this Thursday and Friday. The Oxford site produces Mini cars while Regensburg makes BMW brand cars.

"Our goal is to continue to ensure the supply of our plants," a company spokeswoman told Dow Jones Newswires.

"We have ordered the required volume for 2021 on time and expect our suppliers to deliver according to the orders as per contract," she said, referring to semiconductor orders.

This is the first time BMW is adjusting production due to a supply shortage that started last year and which has already forced other car makers like Volkswagen AG to adapt production.

BMW's production adjustment was first reported by the Financial Times.
