Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) on Tuesday said it will lease another 15
Boeing Co. (BA) 737-800 cargo aircraft from a unit of General
Electric Co. (GE) as the e-commerce giant moves to beef up its
one-day free-shipping service.
Amazon said the 15 aircraft, which are in addition to the five
737-800's it already leases from GE Capital Aviation Services, will
enter its air network by 2021.
Amazon earlier this year said it would invest $800 million to
make one-day free shipping the standard for Prime members, instead
of two days.
"These new aircraft create additional capacity for Amazon Air,
building on the investment in our Prime Free One-Day program," said
Dave Clark, Amazon's senior vice president of worldwide
operations.
Amazon, which also leases freighters from Atlas Air Worldwide
Holdings (AAWW), said it will have 70 aircraft flying in its
dedicated air network by 2021.
Amazon announced the deal with GECAS at the International Paris
Air Show.
