Baltimore Gas and Electric Restores Nearly 90 Percent of Natural
Gas Customers in Overlea-Fullerton Area Full Restoration Remains on
Track for Late Friday BALTIMORE, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Baltimore
Gas and Electric Company (BGE), a subsidiary of Constellation
Energy (NYSE:CEG), today said that it has made significant progress
in restoring natural gas service to residents in the
Overlea-Fullerton neighborhood of Baltimore County and expects to
meet its targeted deadline of Friday for full restoration. The
utility also announced that it has begun conducting follow-up
surveys of its gas mains to ensure there is no leakage of natural
gas in the affected area. "We continue to thank our customers for
their patience throughout this ordeal, particularly now as we come
down the home stretch of this massive restoration effort," said E.
Frank Bender, vice president of gas operations for BGE. "While
we've made tremendous progress, we still have a number of
households where we have been unable to gain access to inspect both
meters and appliances thereby preventing us from relighting pilot
lights. In those cases, we're prepared to work with our customers
on a one-on-one basis but we need for them to contact us to arrange
for a time to enter their homes. Only then, will we be in a
position to fully restore natural gas service to those customers."
As of Thursday morning, service had been restored nearly 1,650
customers, or nearly 90 percent of the roughly 1,900 customers
whose service was interrupted last weekend when water entered two
gas mains at Belair Road and Cardwell Avenue. Of that number,
nearly 350 customers have been found to have some sort of water
damage requiring either repair or replacement of internal customer
piping natural gas-fed appliances. BGE reminds its customers that
if water is detected, the customer will need to have a certified
contractor inspect the customer's internal gas piping and gas
appliances and make any necessary repairs before natural gas
service is fully restored. BGE has left flyers for about 100
customers, appealing to them to make provisions to allow crews
inside their property to inspect meters and natural gas-fed
appliances for water damage. The company will follow up today with
phone calls to those customers as it attempts to schedule
inspection times. Assisting BGE in relighting appliance pilots are
personnel from several neighboring utilities, including Washington
Gas Light, Columbia Gas, Conectiv Power Delivery, Philadelphia Gas
Works and Pennsylvania Power and Light Company (PPL). BGE is a
member of Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG), a Fortune 500 integrated
energy company based in Baltimore. Constellation Energy is the
nation's leading competitive supplier of electricity to large
commercial and industrial customers. It owns and operates a
