The chairman of the Portuguese operations of Banco Santander SA
has died from coronavirus, a person familiar with the situation
said.
Antonio Vieira Monteiro was chairman of Banco Santander Totta,
one of Portugal's largest banks, since early last year, and was
chief executive of the bank between 2012 and 2018. He was 73.
Mr. Monteiro's death is the second registered in Portugal from
the coronavirus, which so far has infected around 450 people. The
government has imposed a series of restrictions to contain the
virus, including closing schools and bars, and limiting traffic in
restaurants, supermarkets and shopping malls.
It has also closed the borders with Spain for nonessential
travel, as the Iberian neighbor registered a sharp rise in cases.
Spain is currently under lockdown.
