MILPITAS, Calif., May 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- JDSU today introduced the Medium Range Optical Dispersion Measurement (MR-ODM) module for the T-BERD/MTS-6000 and -8000 platforms. The single plug-in module includes a patented solution for chromatic dispersion (CD) measurements and offers polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and attenuation profile test functions, making it the industry's most compact and integrated dispersion solution dedicated to field testing fiber optic networks. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090512/SF14979) During the installation or maintenance phases, measuring CD, PMD and attenuation is essential for successful fiber characterization, a series of tests that identify fiber viability for very high-speed transmission systems (10GEth, 40Gb/s and higher). If not properly managed, CD, PMD and attenuation can cause severe performance issues on transmission quality, which must operate at peak levels in order to deliver reliable broadband services. The Medium Range ODM module's combination of CD, PMD, and attenuation test functions allows technicians to validate the fiber link's compatibility with high-speed DWDM systems, including Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs). The performance of each individual function also makes the ODM module ideal for characterizing fiber at 40G and higher in the metro and access network area. "Cable and telecom network operators deploying fiber networks to meet growing broadband demand need the right tools to ensure fiber links operate flawlessly," said Enzo di Luigi, general manager in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "JDSU meets this challenge by enabling efficiency through an integrated solution and offering the highest dispersion performance available in a field test solution by validating about 400 acquisition points in less than 30 seconds." The MR-ODM module is the industry's only CD, PMD and AP analyzer with measurement points across the SCL-bands (1450-1640nm). It has fast acquisition times, and it is test capable through non-bi-directional components (EDFA, filters, and similar components). It has internal and on-line wavelength referencing and has a single input port for any test configuration. The MR-ODM is compatible with plug-in or handheld broadband sources at the far end of the fiber under test.
