Business Wire
Genesis(R) Microchip Inc. (Nasdaq:GNSS), a world leader in the
development of image processing technologies for flat-panel TVs,
monitors, and other consumer display products, and Cirrus Logic
Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS), a world leader in high-precision digital audio
processing and mixed-signal integrated circuits, today announced
that they have jointly developed a reference design for High
Definition mainstream audio/video receivers (HD-AVR). This powerful
reference design enables the AVR to become the home entertainment
hub and gives AVR manufacturers a wealth of advanced audio and
video features, while greatly simplifying user set up and
interaction. Among them: -- Extensive video processing
capabilities, including upconversion of High Definition digital
video from any input signal, using Emmy(R) award-winning
Faroudja(R) technologies. Manufacturers are also able to capitalize
on Faroudja(R) branding in promotion of the product. -- A
simple-to-use, on-screen graphical user interface display to guide
consumers through the set up process and to serve as the command
center controlling the numerous functionalities and features of the
AVR. -- It enables the use of a single cable from the AVR to the
display device, such as a flat-panel monitor or projector, and
supports a wide range of audio and video inputs. "This HD-AVR
platform is truly leading-edge and unique," said Keith Cheney, vice
president and general manager, Embedded Processor Division, Cirrus
Logic. "Manufacturers now have an amazingly powerful audio and
video platform that delivers high-end capabilities at attractive
home theater price points. And consumers will appreciate the
simplicity of the platform's set-up and user-interface." "The
number of video and audio sources for the home is constantly
growing, requiring greater capabilities from the AVR as the central
control hub," said Raphael Mehrbians, Genesis Microchip's senior
vice president of Product Marketing. "This new reference design
combines the high-quality video processing of Faroudja with the
industry-leading audio processing of Cirrus Logic and offers
manufacturers a platform to bring this new level of high
performance AVRs to market quickly. We are excited to participate
in this new market segment for video processing, in addition to our
TV and monitor markets." The new HD-AVR platform offers a range of
technologies to address various price points and feature demands of
the AVR market. High Definition and DTV video require very
high-quality video processing, coupled with maximum switching
flexibility for the home theater. With this platform, AVR
manufacturers can leverage Faroudja's superior video processing
capabilities and can choose from Genesis Microchip's suite of video
processing controllers including the FLI8125 (Hudson), FLI8532
(Cortez) and FLI8668 (Cortez Advanced). These solutions feature
tiered levels of Faroudja video processing algorithms, including
per pixel 3:2 pull-down and DCDi deinterlacing, advanced
TrueLife(TM) edge enhancement, adaptive 3D decoding, full 10-bit
signal path, flexible video switching, advanced scaling and format
conversion technologies. The platform delivers superior audio
quality, with audio processing muscle from Cirrus Logic's 32-bit
dual-core audio DSP, the CS49500 family. It delivers up to 1.44
giga operations per second and offers a complete set of audio
algorithms, including Dolby(R) Digital, Dolby Pro Logic(R) IIx,
Dolby Virtual Speaker(R), Dolby Headphone(R), DTS ES96/24(TM), DTS
Neo:6(TM), THX(R) Ultra2 and SRS technologies. In addition, the
reference design features Cirrus Logic's award-winning Intelligent
Room Calibration(TM) software that performs speaker set up and
equalization automatically. The CS49500 family of DSPs is also
powerful enough to support custom post processing at the back end
of the standard algorithms. The Cirrus Logic CS42448 surround-sound
codecs and CS8416 S/PDIF IC complete the reference design. About
