General Market Outlook

The market is sliding down somewhat, but not nearly to lows of last week. Nearly all coins are down somewhat and trading volume around the same $11.5 Billion in 24 hours. ChainLink (LINK) and VeChain (VET) are the standouts of the top 100 coins by market cap - up almost 10% and ?5% respectively in the past 24 hours. Bitcoin (BTC) is right around  $6,400 for -0.5% and a total market dominance of about 53.0%, and Ethereum (ETH) is right at $280 for -4% change in the past 24 hours. Market cap for the overall cryptocurrency market is down just under $4 billion to $209 billion total.

$818,433 From U.S. Government To Blockchain Project

Subhashini Sivagnanam, a researcher and software architect at the University of California-San Diego won a research grant for a distributed ledger project. He works with the Data Enabled Scientific Computing division at the San Diego Supercomputing Center. The grant is from the National Science Foundation (NSF), and will be used to develop the Open Science Chain (OSC). The proposed network which will help researchers efficiently access and verify data collected through scientific experiments. Researchers will easily add metadata and verification information about their scientific datasets easily updating the datasets, while the blockchain structure maintains the entire unedited history of changes. The grant will begin on Sept. 1, 2018, and carry through until Aug. 31, 2021

 

UPS Blockchain Patent

A patent was filed back in February by UPS that uses blockchain technology to streamline the process of multi-carrier deliveries. The proposal shows a method for distributed ledger technology to maintain a package or packages’ origin, a destination, and transportation parameters that can be easily read across various delivery services. The process includes a matching service that stores shipping rates on the network, to generate a most efficient transportation plan for the package according to its shipment parameters. This portion is divided by each leg of delivery, so that the most efficient service can be used every time. And finally, the process includes live payment processing for the shipment with each leg of delivery.

 

Bitcoin ETN Available to U.S. Citizens

Bitcoin Tracker One, is now quoted in U.S. dollars under the ticker CXBTF, helping brokerages offer it to American investors. This is an Exchange Traded Note, meaning that the value is dependent on debt, rather than a pool of assets that are the basis for ETFs. It was created by CoinShares Holdings, and started trading in Sweden on the NASDAQ Stockholm exchange in 2015. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency related ETFs have been making headlines this month, but the only definite results in the U.S. have been rejection from the SEC. “I do see this as a competitive product.
