ROME--Italy's gasoline service stations may be shut down Dec. 12-14 after labor unions representing pump attendants and owners called for a strike, demanding government intervention to help the sector hamstrung by the recession.

Gasoline stations face an overall debt level of 300 million euros ($384 million), said the unions, FAIB Confesercenti, Fegica Cisl, Figisc/Anisa Confcommercio.

The unions also said they will hold a protest in the capital, Rome, on Dec. 12.

Industry Ministry Undersecretary Claudio De Vincenti said Tuesday the government will try to get all parties to sit at a negotiating table to seek a solution.
