FTSE 100 to Rise as Omicron Concerns Ease
0743 GMT - The FTSE 100 is seen opening higher as concerns over
the Omicron coronavirus variant ease after early hospital data from
South Africa suggests it could result in less severe illness than
previous waves. Spreadbetting firm IG expects the London index to
rise 23 points at the start of trading. "Indications so far still
show [Omicron] isn't prompting a big rise in hospitalisations and
deaths, raising the hope that while it may be as transmissible as
the common cold, that could be as bad as it gets," CMC Markets
analyst Michael Hewson says. That hope drove Monday's market gains
but it doesn't take too much for sentiment to switch from being
positive to negative, he says. (renae.dyer@wsj.com)
