Mondelez International Inc. said profit nearly doubled and revenue increased in the latest quarter as home-bound consumers continued to spend on cookies and snacks.

The Chicago-based maker of Oreos and Triscuits said profit was $1.08 billion in the second quarter, compared with $545 million a year earlier. Earnings were 76 cents on a per-share basis, up from 38 cents in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted earnings were 66 cents a share, one cent ahead of analysts' consensus estimates, according to FactSet.

Mondelez's revenue rose 12% from a year ago to $6.64 billion. Analysts were targeting revenue of $6.41 billion.

Costs and expenses rose in the June quarter. The company has previously said it plans to spend more on marketing this year to maintain its strong sales growth that has been largely driven by the coronavirus pandemic.
