AMENDMENT TO ANNOUNCEMENT MADE EARLIER TODAY

UNITED OVERSEAS GROUP PLC ESOP TRUST ("TEH ESOP")

The ESOP was recently established to purchase Ordinary Shares in the Company for
the benefit of employees.  The ESOP has notified the Company that on 10 July
1998 it purchased 198,000 (not 100,000 as previously announced) Ordinary Shares
(representing 0.16 per cent of the shares in issue) at a price of 100p per
share.  The ESOP's holding after this purchase is 198,000 Ordinary Shares.
