Order Update: China Public Lighting Control
Cyan Holdings plc (AIM:CYAN.L), announces that it has received an important
initial order for wireless monitoring and control of outdoor public lighting in
China. Cyan manufactures a range of module products that implement wireless
utility metering and lighting control systems.
The initial order is for 10,000 modules, and installation will start after the
Chinese New Year in Q1 2011. The customer's initial project requires the
replacement of 200,000 street lights in a single city and the installation rate
is expected to exceed 10,000 units per month by Q4 2011. The end customer is a
large established Chinese lighting manufacturer who has informed Cyan's
management that it has already won, or expects to win, contracts in three
further cities, albeit for smaller projects.
Cyan products will be used to manage and dim a new generation of High Intensity
Discharge ("HID") lights, which are both brighter and lower cost than LED
streetlights. In the local Chinese government trial that preceded the award of
this order, the HID lights, when assisted by Cyan lighting control systems,
consumed less power than LED lighting.
Cyan developed additional features for this customer incorporating metering
technology to measure energy usage so that savings can be calculated, thereby
creating a real-time energy management platform. This was an essential feature
as the customer will receive payments based on the actual energy savings
realised. Cyan also developed map based remote management systems that allow
individual light locations to be identified on interactive maps that display
current status, enabling remote control of individual lights and changes to
lighting profiles. Control is provided over the mobile phone network using other
Cyan products.
Following this contract win and the impressive results of the trial, the
customer now plans to market Cyan controlled HID products across the whole of
China through its network of over 2,000 agents. Cyan is currently in negotiation
with the customer to further develop their HID lighting product by tightening
the integration between Cyan lighting control and the other elements of the HID
light to create a highly integrated and lower total cost HID lighting solution.
Kenn Lamb, CEO of Cyan Holdings plc commented:
"I am delighted to announce an initial order for HID lighting systems in China
so soon after an initial LED lighting system order in India. The previous
announcement included more background information on the market drivers and
features of Cyan's lighting products, but it is now evident that Cyan offers
significant benefits across a range of different lighting types. We are also
impressed with the relative energy saving performance of HID compared to LED,
which was the presumed lowest power technology. In the opinion of Cyan's
management, the cost of LED lighting has prevented large volume deployment to
date; the significantly lower cost of Cyan controlled HID lighting may prove to
be decisive in making large installations affordable in China and could be the
driver for future exports of such lighting from China into other markets."
