95.8 Capital FM's London lead boosted by growth in 15-34's and female listening
* 95.8 Capital FM - #1 commercial station with 2.2 million listeners and
7.2% share
* 95.8 Capital FM #1 commercial Breakfast Show
* Capital Radio London - #1 with increased reach and share
* Xfm London - consolidates strong performance over past year
* Choice FM - growing listeners, achieving record share
* Capital Radio Group - the UK's most listened to local radio group
Capital Radio continues its strategy to build national brands with some notable
successes across its portfolio of stations. In London, where the Capital Radio
portfolio delivers four strong and distinct offerings aligned to the music
tastes and lifestyles of listeners from 15 to 54 years, the Group has grown its
reach to 3.07 million listeners and increased its market share.
At our flagship station, 95.8 Capital FM, we have seen increases in both reach
and share. Strengthening our brand leadership position in London, Capital FM has
also widened the gap with our nearest commercial competitor in terms of reach.
In its first full set of RAJAR results, the Breakfast show with Johnny Vaughan
remains the number one commercial show in London and is off to a good start
while it continues its bedding-in period with listeners. Our listener feedback
shows that the station's renewed focus on appealing to the entertainment and
lifestyle needs of active Londoners is working, and that Johnny is now the most
highly regarded presenter amongst our target audience. As a result the station's
share of listening amongst target 25-34 females has soared from 9.4% to 24.5%.
Elsewhere in London, Xfm maintained its strong performance over the past twelve
months with 572,000 adult listeners, up 14% year on year. Our most recent
acquisition, Choice FM has recorded its second consecutive increase up to
383,000 listeners and celebrates its highest ever share of 3.2%.
After a year of strong growth, Century FM continues to be the number one
commercial service in the North West and East Midlands, and the network
maintained overall reach of 18%. In the Capital FM Network, BRMB increased share
for the second consecutive quarter whilst Beat 106 lifted its reach by 30,000
listeners and increased share to 6.4%.
David Mansfield, Capital Radio plc Chief Executive commented: "Increased
competition is healthy for listeners, advertisers and the radio business. The
recent changes to the Capital FM line up and the breakfast show in particular,
were designed to attract new listeners and encourage longer listening, which we
have begun to achieve. As anticipated some listeners have tried other stations
at breakfast; however the station as a whole has seen growth across the rest of
the day. Johnny Vaughan is proving to be a significant radio talent and we
confidently predict he will win new listeners and build audiences over the next
two years."
