THE WIRELESS GROUP EXTENDS DIGITAL RADIO PORTFOLIO WITH CENTRAL SCOTLAND
MULTIPLEX WIN
The Wireless Group plc ("TWG"), the UK's fourth largest commercial radio
group, announced today that Switchdigital (Scotland), a consortium backed by
The Wireless Group (55%), Capital Radio (20%), Clear Channel International
(20%), and The Carphone Warehouse (5%), has been awarded the Central Scotland
digital multiplex by the Radio Authority. The multiplex is the largest
outside Greater London awarded to date and will cover the main population
centres of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling, a potential audience of almost 3
million.
The Switchdigital (Scotland) line-up will comprise nine digital services
providing a mixture of music and speech programming and targeting a wide range
of audiences and age groups. The Wireless Group will provide three services:
- Scot FM the existing adult contemporary music and speech based service;
- the rock and sports service "BIG Scotland"; and
- the easy listening service "The Lounge", targeting older listeners with
non-stop smooth classics.
The other services include:
- a jazz soul and blues service from Jazz FM;
- a new rock and dance service from Beat 106;
- a chart hits and club dance service from the Ministry of Sound;
- The Rhythm, a brand new classic soul service;
- WSCO The Mix, a new classic hits service; and
- Radio Nan Gaidheal, the BBC's Gaelic service.
TWG's three digital radio services for the Central Scotland multiplex brings
the total number of digital radio services operated by the Group to 19,
including talkSPORT and Bloomberg talkMONEY, two of only 10 national
commercial digital radio services. Increasing its digital presence is
consistent with The Wireless Group's stated strategy of capturing greater
market share by adding digital radio assets to its existing portfolio of 16
analogue radio licences.
In April Switchdigital (London), in which TWG has a 42.5% interest, was
awarded the strategically important second London digital licence. This
multiplex went on air in July 2000.
Kelvin MacKenzie, Chairman of the Switchdigital (Scotland) Consortium and
Chairman and Chief Executive of The Wireless Group, said:
"The Central Scotland multiplex is an excellent addition to The Wireless
Group's digital radio portfolio and will offer Scottish listeners an exciting
range of new and existing services, including services provided by two of
Scotland's best known stations, Scot FM and Beat 106. The Wireless Group now
has significant interest in two major metropolitan multiplexes - the means of
transmission - covering 13 million potential listeners which provides a strong
foundation for future growth".
