      HILARY CROPPER APPOINTED AS NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
                               
                               
Hilary Cropper will join the boards of Barclays PLC and
Barclays Bank PLC as a non-executive director with effect 
from June 1, 1998.

Mrs Cropper is chief executive and deputy chairman of
F.I.GROUP PLC, a leading supplier of business enabling
technology services.  She joined F.I.GROUP in 1985 following a
career at GEC and ICL. In 1991, Mrs Cropper led an employee
buy-out, as a result of which the employees controlled about
50% of the voting power.  F.I.GROUP was successfully floated
on the London Stock Exchange in April 1996 and was voted Best
New Company of the Year in the PLC Awards sponsored by the
Financial Times.

Andrew Buxton, Barclays chairman, said: 'We are delighted that
Hilary is joining our Board.  Her experience in the technology
sector will bring a valuable perspective and I am sure she
will make a very dynamic contribution.'

Note to Editors

Mrs Cropper has been chief executive of F.I.GROUP PLC since
1987 and was appointed deputy chairman in 1997.  She is
currently a governor of the University of Hertfordshire, a
member of the Financial Reporting Council and a director of
London First.

Cropper is a Freeman of the City of London and a founder
member of the Worshipful Company of Information
Technologists.
