Volkswagen AG said Wednesday that it is extending cooperation with its sustainability council for an additional two years as it seeks to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The German car maker has appointed Magdalena Gerger, chief executive of Swedish enterprise Systembolaget AB, and former member of the European Parliament Rebecca Harms as new members of the council.

"We have a clear plan and concrete measures to reach this target," Volkswagen Chief Executive Herbert Diess said. "However, there is still a long way to go and a major effort is still needed. The contributions and stimuli from the sustainability council are therefore all the more important."

The Volkswagen Sustainability Council, which has nine members, was set up in 2016 to help the company address issues relating to sustainability and social responsibility.
