First Canadian cable company to introduce app that provides on-screen entertainment suggestions based on customers' real-time viewing

Customers can easily navigate double the movies and shows On Demand served up by NextBox

TORONTO, Nov. 13, 2013 /CNW/ - Rogers Communications unveiled today a Recommendation App for NextBox that takes TV viewing to the next level. With twice as many movies and TV shows On Demand compared to Fibe™, the new recommendation tool allows Rogers customers to dive deep into their entertainment libraries and discover more programming within their cable packages. The app gives access to personalized live, rental, On Demand and previously recorded program recommendations displayed right on TV screens.

"We are committed to providing the best entertainment and in-home video experiences for our customers. The Recommendation App is a cable industry first and an evolution of our NextBox experience that lets customers spend less time searching and more time being entertained," said David Purdy, senior vice-president, content, Rogers Communications. "Canadians can now explore and uncover more programming that appeals to their individual tastes, from the most popular original series to niche specialty channels."

Naturally integrated into the TV viewing experience and accessible in a variety of non-intrusive ways, the app recommends similar programs based on what customers are currently viewing or just finished watching. Recommendations are accessed in PVR mode, On Demand, through search or live TV listings. App highlights include:

  • Press the "Info" or "Guide" buttons on the remote, scroll over to the information icon and a prompt will appear.
  • Select "More Like This Show" from the prompt to review a list of recommended titles.
  • Viewers can also discover even more titles by selecting the new "Most Watched" menu, which reveals the popular TV shows, movies, and channels viewed by Rogers customers at that time.
  • Recommendations are based on the preferred genre, director and starring actors, and are personalized to the current program the customer is watching.

The Recommendation App is part of the NextBox 3.0 experience that gives viewers unprecedented access to record up to eight HD programs at one time, one TB of PVR storage capacity and watch twice as many movies and shows On Demand when compared to Fibe™. The app is rolling out to Rogers customers with NextBox 2.0 and 3.0 in Ontario. For more information visit www.rogers.com/NextBox.
