Unilever said Friday that it has appointed Ian Meakins as its new chairman from Dec. 1, replacing Nils Andersen who is stepping down.

The Anglo-Dutch retailer--which owns consumer brands such as Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Dove soap and Domestos cleaning products--said that Meakins will join the board as a nonexecutive director on Sept. 1.

Anderson will be stepping down from the board at the annual general meeting in May.

Meakins is currently Chair of Compass Group and Rexel.
