Unilever NV said Tuesday that it is closing its washing-powder
factory in Warrington, England, due to "a sustained and
irreversible decline in demand" of the product.
The multisector retailer said that market volumes for the
factory product--the Persil and Surf laundry powder
detergents--have fallen 15% in the last four years, as consumers
have been switching to other types of laundry products,
particularly laundry liquids and capsules.
"We have, unfortunately, been unable to identify any
commercially sustainable solutions for the site," Vice President of
Supply Chain Jon Strachan said.
