Social Factors Helped Scuttle Fiat/Renault Deal -- Market Talk
June 06 2019 - 6:31PM
Dow Jones News
2201 GMT - The potential negative social implications of the
Fiat Chrysler/Renault merger have played a critical role in the
failed deal. Social factors will remain a key factor in automotive
industry M&A, especially when countries hold a significant
stake in automakers. The latter is likely to remain unchanged in
the short term despite the sector's needs for consolidation.
Uncertainty around job protection as Fiat looks for cost savings,
on top of the unstable political atmosphere in France linked to the
recent yellow-vest protests led the French government to ask for a
delay, which motivated Fiat's offer withdrawal.
