Alphabet's Google plans to start manufacturing Pixel smartphones in India, joining fellow smartphone maker Apple in diversifying its supply chain away from China.

Google will start with the latest Pixel 8 series, which will be available for purchase in early 2024, Google said in a statement on Thursday.

The company "will partner international and domestic manufacturers to produce Pixel smartphones locally," as part of the country's "Make in India" initiative, Google said.

Due to growing concerns about geopolitical tensions and the supply-chain bottlenecks during the pandemic, tech companies have gradually shifted their production away from China. Apple has accelerated its plans to move its supply chain out of China and is now building devices in countries such as India and Vietnam.
