BellSouth Announces Plans to Redeem $517 Million in Outstanding Debt

ATLANTA - June 22, 2004 - BellSouth Corporation (as successor by merger to
BellSouth Capital Funding Corporation) (NYSE: BLS), announced today that it will
redeem all of its outstanding $517 Million Forty Year 7-3/8% Quarterly Interest
Bonds, due August 1, 2039, on August 1, 2004. The redemption price will be 100%
of the principal amount. Interest on the Bonds will cease to accrue on and
after the redemption date. Payment of the redemption price will be made upon
presentation and surrender of the unsigned Debentures to The Bank of New York,
the paying agent, as follows:

BellSouth Corporation has also announced the sale of $700 million of debentures, which will mature on June 15, 2034.
Proceeds from the sale will be used to pay the redemption price of the Quarterly Interest Bonds to be redeemed on August
1, 2004 and to refinance debt that matured earlier this month.
