Sainsbury Appoints Walgreens Boots' Simon Roberts As Retail Director

LONDON-- J Sainsbury PLC (SBRY.LN), the U.K.'s second-biggest supermarket chain by market share, has named Simon Roberts, who was most recently president of pharmacy group Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc's UK operations, as its retail and operations director.

Mr. Roberts, who was Executive Vice President of Walgreens Boots Alliance and President of Boots in the U.K. & Ireland, having joined Boots in 2003 before it merged with Walgreen, will report to Sainsbury Chief Executive Mike Coupe, the company said.

"Simon is a very strong leader who is passionate about customers and colleagues," said Mr Coupe.

"He has extensive stores experience, is customer-centric in everything he does and I am confident he will make a fantastic contribution to Sainsbury's and the operating board," he added.

Sainsbury shares at 1021 GMT, down 2 pence, or 1%, at 240 pence valuing the company at GBP5.25 billion.
