Quebecor Media President and CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau today
welcomed the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission's ("CRTC") approval of a Category 2 digital specialty TV
channel licence for the upcoming hard news and straight talk SUN
NEWS.
"Today marks the dawn of a new era for Canadian news media,"
said Mr. Peladeau in responding to the CRTC announcement. "SUN NEWS
will be a welcome addition to Sun Media Corporation's English
language newspapers and news websites. It will aim to challenge
conventional wisdom and offer Canadians a new choice and a new
voice on TV."
Television remains a vital source of news and information for
Canadians. And all-news specialty services play a vital role in
keeping Canadians well informed on a minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour
basis and ensuring that news coverage is both broad and deep. SUN
NEWS proposes to go beyond the obvious day-by-day headlines and to
cover the full range of stories that impact our society, our
democracy and our economy.
The hard news/straight talk formula is a proven recipe for
success. The French-language all-news specialty service LCN saw its
ratings more than double when it moved toward that formula just
over three years ago. Today LCN is a commercial success and has
re-energized news coverage for French-speaking viewers.
