2009 Sustainability Report Details Mosaic's Commitment to Helping
the World Grow the Food It Needs PLYMOUTH, Minn. Nov. 9
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS) today
announced it has completed a thorough, company-wide sustainability
assessment and published an inaugural sustainability report
summarizing key economic, social, agricultural, and environmental
initiatives. The report, available at
http://www.mosaicco.com/sustainability/report, measures Mosaic's
progress on sustainability performance indicators established by
the independent Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). It also outlines
Mosaic's sustainability goals for the years to come. "Mosaic is one
of the world's leading producers of essential phosphate and potash
crop nutrients, and it is our mission to help the world grow the
food it needs," said Jim Prokopanko, Mosaic's President and Chief
Executive Officer. "To achieve our mission, we are incorporating
sustainability principles into every aspect of our business. We are
also setting ambitious new goals for the future." Among the report
highlights, Mosaic has: -- Reduced by 23% the total direct energy
consumption of its U.S. operations since 2005; -- Used
hydroelectric sources for nearly 100% of its power in Brazil; --
Generated nearly 50% of the electrical load needed to run its
Florida operations on its own -- enough energy savings to power
100,000 homes; -- Reclaimed 2,483 acres of land in fiscal 2009; and
-- Recycled 95% of all water used in its Florida mining facilities.
"We are proud of our performance," Prokopanko said, "but this is
only the beginning of Mosaic's efforts. As we meet new
sustainability metrics, we will continue to report our progress on
an annual basis." About The Mosaic Company The Mosaic Company is
