Enough to power 1.1 million U.S. homes for a
full year
Opower (NYSE: OPWR), the global leader in cloud-based software
for the utility industry, today announced that it has saved over 11
terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy in partnership with 100 utilities
across four continents. The figure represents enough energy to
power over 1 million U.S. homes for a full year, and is equivalent
to more than $1.1 billion in savings on customers’ energy
bills.
“This is a huge milestone, and it demonstrates that smart
software can have a significant, tangible impact on the way
utilities and their customers use energy,” said Opower CEO Dan
Yates. “With Opower’s help, utilities are transforming the way they
approach demand-side management and playing a pivotal role in
shaping a cleaner, safer, and more affordable energy future.”
Opower works with some of the largest utility companies on
earth, including Exelon, Pacific Gas & Electric, National Grid,
Con Edison, Southern California Edison, E.ON UK, ENMAX Energy,
ComEd, and TNB in Malaysia. The cumulative impact of saving 11 TWh
is equivalent to taking 1.6 million cars off the road for a year.
In 2015 alone, Opower and its partners saved 3.2 TWh of energy —
twice as much energy as America’s largest residential solar company
generated over the same time period.
“ComEd has worked with Opower since 2009, delivering nearly 750
GWh of savings for our customers to date,” said George Malek,
Director of Energy Efficiency Services at ComEd. “Opower’s Home
Energy Reports have enabled ComEd to scale energy efficiency in a
way that achieves extraordinary savings for our customers.”
Opower’s demand-side management program is driven by the leading
customer engagement platform in the utility industry, which uses
proprietary personalization algorithms and ingests more than 85
different variables to produce insights and recommendations unique
to every customer. To date, Opower’s analytics engine has processed
more than 500 billion meter reads — making it the largest
residential energy data store on earth.
