General Motors Co. (GM) plans to invest $24 million in its assembly plant in the Fort Wayne, Ind., area to boost production of pickup trucks.

The company said Thursday it is making the investments to drive more production of its Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups.

GM said it is investing in conveyers and other tooling at the plant and that the upgrades will be finished this summer.

Together, the sales of both crew cab pickup models rose 20% in the first quarter of this year compared with a year earlier, GM said, adding that it expects "another significant increase for the second quarter" as well.
